40,000 LGV drivers alone are estimated to leave the industry in 2017

The Road Transport Industry Training Board (RTITB) has estimated that about 40,000 LGV drivers are set to leave the industry this year due to retirement. Inevitably by the end of 2017, there will be a shortfall of drivers within the road transport industry if nothing is done to counteract this.

Currently, around 85% of the UK’s goods are transported by road, meaning there is a risk that this demand is not sustainable with 40,000 drivers off the road. According to Laura Nelson, the Managing Director of the RTITB “The UK logistics industry is facing a massive shortage of skilled staff, such as LGV drivers”

“However, despite LGV driving being a highly skilled job with opportunity for career progression, logistics and road haulage is rarely considered an attractive career option for young people.”

“This can be achieved easily through training. When an employer offers in-house trainers or works in partnership with a local training provider, it can help to incentivise workers to earn a reputable qualification and become an integral part of the operation.”

Spending on external training providers continues to fall…

RTITB are looking to work with organisations to inject growth into the industry and encourage young drivers to join the industry. But currently, Spending on external training providers continues to fall.

Outsourced training services now only account for 14% of Learning and Development spending compared to 41% in 2009 and 27% in 2012. However, one of the greatest increases in external spend on learning technology in the last five years has been in online learning portals (up from 47% to 54%)*.
